A hiring paradox exists at Starr Tincup – we are never hiring, yet we are always hiring. Yes, our ways are a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.
As the old dating adage goes, you find the right person when you aren’t really looking. And because hiring the wrong person is a good deal less entertaining than dating the wrong person – and yes, I’m thinking about that time with Shannon and the 19 Jell-o shots. Sure, she stole my stereo equipment and didn’t tell me about her husband, but, hey, good times, right?
Anyway, we hire four kinds of people – designers, writers, technologists and managers. We’ve found that it’s harder to hire based on need. We prefer to hire based on fit. When we find people who seem like they might mesh with our unorthodox culture, we talk to them. Then, sometimes, we hire them.
We’ve also learned over time that we are not an entry-level organization. If you want to work here, you should have at least 10 years doing what you do. Knowledge of human resources and human capital is a must. We can promise you hard work, long hours and little tolerance for poor quality. However, you will also have the chance to shine while developing innovative marketing solutions in a collaborative environment with a bunch of kick-ass professionals at the top of their game. Also, you can wear shorts and t-shirts to work pretty much every day.
We’re not for everybody. Hell, we’re not for most people. But love what we do and where we work. If you are truly exceptional, holla. Email careers@starrtincup.com. We'll be in touch. For specifics about our positions, keep reading.
Graphic / Web Designers
There are a lot of designers out there, and we look at a lot of portfolios. What’s different about you? Be prepared to answer. Most of the design work we have is of the web variety. It’s not that we don’t do print work, it’s just that our clients are all up in this Internet thing. We are not that hung up on whether you have agency experience or have a lot of design awards. You don’t need a degree from a prestigious design program. You do need to know the Adobe CS like a mofo – Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Flash and Fireworks. Knowledge of video editing is a big plus. Some geekery with HTML, PHP, and ASP are also desired.

Content Writers
Some may call them copywriters, but this World Wide Web has really changed the job. Writing sizzling copy isn’t enough – you need to think visually and in three-dimensions. You need to be flexible and resourceful, and, dammit, you’d better be funny. Agency experience isn’t necessary. Neither are fancy awards, although we do have a guy here who was a finalist for a Pulitzer. Yes, I tell you to intimidate you. Ability to turn a phrase is nice, but critical thinking is essential. Knowledge of the human resources and human capital space is mandatory. So, if you can rock the content Casbah, hit us with a resume and some work samples.

Account Managers
For starters, you must have extensive experience with marketing in the human capital space. What qualifies as "extensive experience?" Well, if you've ever been a VP of Marketing, your ears should be burning. We want people who take a strategic view of account management and plan and oversee the execution of all marketing activities for our clients on clients’ behalf. MBA is preferred but not required. If your idea is to delegate your work to someone else, think again. We are a highly collaborative business, and everyone is required to roll up their sleeves. Maybe it isn’t for everyone, but if you want a chance to work with A-list clients on awesome projects, this is the place to be.
